The curious case of the duplex apartment in Telheiras

Public housing programs are announced massively by the press. But little is said about the properties in question and their conditions. Maybe this is worth looking into...

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a short story published in 1922, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald (author of the famous The Great Gatsby), adapted to cinema by David Fincher in 2008. It is the story of a man who is born with the physical characteristics of an elderly person and whose appearance becomes increasingly younger to the point that, in the final stretch of his life, he resembles a child.

Unlike Scott Fitzgerald’s story, what I’m bringing you today is a story based entirely on true facts, which aims to share the real supply of public housing, in what is the 3rd tender of Lisbon City Council’s (CML) Affordable Rental Program, which began last week and ends on November 5th.

Amongst the apartments that most caught my attention, there was one that stood out from the rest: a furnished duplex in Telheiras, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. And a terrace facing West. And a front door that, according to Google Maps, is 120 meters away from Telheiras subway station.

According to the regulatory framework of the Affordable Rental Program, the number of people in each application determines the housing types they can apply for (someone alone, for example, can only choose a studio or a one-bedroom apartment). This means that, in order to be able to apply for this two-bedroom or any other, the household (which does not have to contemplate family or marital ties) must have at least two people. Also, the minimum annual income must be within the ranges found here.

Being that, in this CML program, the rent of a two-bedroom will never exceed € 600 (see table below). Even though a monthly fee is added to the rent of the furnished houses, depending on the furniture, in this case € 30.34.

In case this isn’t yet clear, a visit to any national real estate portal will enlighten you: it is a bargain.
